Richard Fenwick // UK

Richard Fenwick is an artist, writer, and, most notably, director based between Newcastle and London, United Kingdom. His colorful and expansive body of work has taken many forms across the genres that typically categorize filmmaking. He has built romances, thrillers, and science fiction universes, animated and filmed live action, and got his start to all that with music videos. He works experimentally, cinematically, and commercially. Perhaps the only predictable trend in his oeuvre - his films keep consistently getting longer. Fenwick explores the inner-workings of an individual and its imaginative projection into the outside landscape. His films present a splendor of possibilities in the haphazard ruminations of the active, often pressed, mind in the urban landscape. As the mutability of our landscapes becomes a stark reality of urban life, his work offers a well of possible approaches for individuals inside active worlds. Working as a mentor with Random Acts, an artist residency program in the United Kingdom organized by Channel 4, Fenwick provides measured insight into the work of early-career artists and filmmakers. He is an artist in the most technical sense. Finely attuned skills bring about the greatest freedom in expression of idea and voice. Fenwick is friendly with the testy fusion of images, graphics, and animation - a hard ask of most filmmakers. But Fenwick, who may be a wizard, welds them with a firm thumb and a dainty wrist, and his delusions tend to be a comfortable experience. Fenwick’s impressive pedigree of awards and award nominations spans from the MTV Dance Awards, in 2002 for Timo Maas’ “To Get Down,” to winning the audience award for the best film at the Hamburg Short Film Festival, for Love Letter in 2006. Over the past couple of years, he has become an ever-present feature at international film festivals.
