The process undergone by the transnational migrant, of settling in a new environment, is made somehow more complex nowadays by global communication, which allows one to linger in between different cultures without ever making precise choices. This prolonged transition often gives birth to a sort of schizophrenia, a state of incoherence where one tries to absorb the local culture and customs, but at the same time refuses to give up his or her ancestral conduct, often ending up in a hybrid condition, unsatisfied and uncomfortable both with the country of origin and that of election. Bitter, tasteless or pretentious, like the fruit of an unsuccessful graft.
Girolamo Marri’s expanded practice makes a point of not belonging to any specific medium or field. He questions the notion of artwork in performative talks that don’t begin, in silent interviews, in texts meant to be forever updated, or diluting his authorship in convoluted collaborative projects. Frustrating our need to define, he looks for the might and poetry of what fails to be pinned down or to be noticed at all. From his studio in London his work is featured at forums, exhibitions, galleries and ‘happenings’ throughout the UK, across Europe and Asia such as the 3rd International New Media Forum (Sichuan, China), Friktioner Festival (Uppsala, Sweden), Galleria OltreDiMore (Bologna, Italy) DeptfordX Festival (The Albany, London, UK). He has a residency at Firstsite in Colchester (UK).
