Christian de Laubadère // A Neck

A Neck, 2015
Mixed Media Painting
Christian’s eventual and continuing source of inspiration became the neck line and nape of women, a sensual place and the link between the head and the body, mostly hidden, for women cannot see the nape of their neck, at least never directly. From either a simple loose braid to a sophisticated hairdo pinned with pearls, thin bamboo pieces or silk ribbon, he chooses to give the nape a personality all of its own, whether Western or Asian. He adorns them with embroidered silk fabric, lace, oriental fabrics, Indian cotton, painted Chinese fans, or his own delicate patterns patiently stylized on the back and shoulders. The silhouettes appear neatly on a rubbed soot background, each with a unique hairstyle and ornament, evoking beauties of the Italian Renaissance. A posture of a neck and hair mirrors human’s health and flow of energy while Christian de Laubadère makes them immortal.
Born in 1945, in France’s Gascogne region, Christian de Laubadère graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris and taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bayonne. He has lived and worked in Shanghai since 2003. His works have been exhibited and he is part of collections in Europe, USA and Asia.
